Friday 4th April 2008

The Coble Inn displays the first piece of public art produced by a resident of Newbiggin.

A ceramic tile panel has replaced the old Coble sign overlooking the promenade. It contains a series of symbolic images representing easily recognisable features of Newbiggin. A coble is prominent overlooked by a puffin which stands on the Point rocks with a lifebelt to hand. St. Bartholomew’s Church is also prominently represented with the Coble Inn itself and Bertorelli’s Cafe Riviera sign, which has, sadly, now disappeared. The lifeboat station is featured together with simple images representing the Couple, the horseshoe steps and the old breakwater. The whole panel is held together with subtle colours which reflect the outlook of Newbiggin. The work is by ceramicist Peter Seddon who lives and works in Newbiggin and who hopes to see more panels like this appear elsewhere in Newbiggin. A selection of pictures of the installation appears below.

The Coble Inn is one of the oldest public houses in Newbiggin. It is in a 17th century building and has been trading as a public house since the early 1800's. It is situated on the seafront in the middle of the village only yards from the beach overlooking the first permanent offshore sculpture in the UK - "Couple" by Sean Henry.

The traditional public house has recently been taken over by Dennis and Jackie and they and their friendly staff extend a warm welcome to everybody.

An excellent cellar ensures a good range of fine ale and lager. An equally good range of wines, spirits and soft drinks is also available.

A large collection of Newcastle United memorabilia is the basis for regular large screen TV matches. Darts and pool are also offered.
