A
family business with the personal touch, E. Watson and Sons
provide a total after-sales service with our own engineers
and workshop contained within the premises.
We specialise
in T.V. and Video repairs, and we sell T.V.s, hi-fi, videos,
fridges, micro-waves and washing machines. We also stock giftware
and fancy goods, lamps and occasional tables. We are agents
for HITACHI, JVC, SHARP, SAMSUNG, HOT POINT, ELECTROLUX, BOSCH,
CANDY, CREDA, DYSON.
The
business was started by Brian's grandfather, Emerson, who
worked for the L.N.E.R. He ran a Hardware and Ironmongers'
business from a house in Queens street, Newbiggin. Selling
all manner of hardware, including cycles, motorbikes. He also
sold the extremely flammable "Carbide" that the
miners used in their lamps at that time. Part of his trade
was charging the batteries on Accumulator radios. This was
the beginning of the electrical connection. He also sold the
poss tubs that eventually became washing machines! The business
was relocated to the present site in 1912.
In 1943,
Emerson died. He had ten children (7 sons and 3 daughters).
They helped run the business during the war until Tommy, who
was in the R.A.F. radar division, could get de-mobbed. This
was only achieved with a lot of pressure from his mother and
the local M.P; as his job with radar made it difficult for
the R.A.F. to release him. He took over the reigns of the
business in 1946. The business moved with the times, seeing
the introduction of television and electrical washing machines.
In
1984 Brian became a partner and in 1986 with the death of
Tommy, Brian took over the running of the business. Brian
and his wife Christine have three children who have all helped
with the business. Currently his daughter Naomi is working
alongside her dad. Brian
is a member of the Newbiggin Chamber of Trade.
